Job Description

Calton & Associates is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Staff Accountant to support and manage the accounting functions for an RIA and Broker-Dealer. This role is responsible for daily accounting operations, maintaining accurate financial records, supporting regulatory reporting, and assisting with other accounting/finance functions as needed. The Staff Accountant will work closely with other personnel to ensure financial accuracy, compliance, and operational efficiency.

The Staff Accountant will prepare journal entries, perform balance sheet reconciliations, analyze general ledger account variances, assist in the preparation of management and regulatory financial reports and help ensure the firm’s financials comply with SEC, FINRA, state securities, and insurance regulatory requirements. Other responsibilities also include supporting budgeting processes, audits, and financial reporting, as well as helping implement and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.

This position plays a key role in ensuring Calton’s financial reporting aligns with regulatory obligations and the firm’s policies and supervisory procedures, while contributing to effective risk management across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead month-end and year-end close processes, preparing accurate financial statements and ensuring compliance with US GAAP
  • Prepare regulatory filings, including FINRA FOCUS reports, SIPC filings, and SEC-related reports
  • Manage daily operational accounting: general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, commissions, and expense allocations
  • Reconcile custody, clearing, and banking accounts; investigate and resolve discrepancies
  • Collaborate with compliance on reporting obligations and respond to regulator inquiries
  • Support internal and external audits; prepare schedules, coordinate with auditors, and provide documentation
  • Implement and optimize internal controls, policies, and procedures
  • Assist in budget preparation and variance analysis

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 3–6 years’ accounting experience, ideally with a broker-dealer or financial services firm
  • Solid understanding of US GAAP, SEC, and FINRA regulatory requirements
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Sage, QuickBooks) and Excel
  • Familiarity with clearing/custody processes, broker-dealer commissions, and industry terminology
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills for working across teams and with auditors/regulators
